• Meeting G6 Without Raising the Roof for Princes Street

    Published on 16 Feb 2026

Built in the 1800s, 79 Princes Street in Dunedin has recently undergone a thoughtful conversion into modern apartments. While rich in character, the building’s original lightweight timber midfloors posed a significant challenge — excessive noise transfer between dwellings.

To meet New Zealand Building Code Clause G6 requirements, the project required an acoustic solution suitable for an existing timber joist midfloor with a fire-rated ceiling below. Floor height was a critical constraint; raising levels would have meant altering doors and compromising ceiling heights.

The team selected Phonestar Lite, a thin acoustic board system designed to achieve G6 compliance on timber substrates without adding unnecessary bulk.

PhoneStar Lite's slim profile allowed for a straightforward installation while maintaining existing thresholds and proportions — a major advantage in a heritage conversion. The system was compatible with multiple floor finishes, including timber, tile, and carpet.
